More About BMW ZF8HP Platform

Advanced Gear Set Concept

The heart of the 8HP transmission lies in its innovative gear set concept. With just 5 shift elements powering 4 gear sets, 8HP optimizes every shift. By opening only two shift elements per gear, drag losses are significantly reduced, making 8HP a highly efficient choice. This streamlined approach, combined with 3 multidisk clutches and 2 brakes, makes 8HP more efficient than traditional transmission systems. The inclusion of a state-of-the-art parallel-axis vane cell pump further enhances efficiency, driving superior performance with every shift.

Power and Efficiency in Harmony

Whether you're driving a mid-size car or a sporty luxury vehicle, the 8HP transmission is engineered to deliver. With a torque range spanning 220 to 1,000 Newton meters, 8HP is perfectly suited for all rear-wheel and all-wheel drive concepts. Despite offering 2 additional gears compared to its predecessor, the 6HP, the 8HP maintains the same compact dimensions while reducing weight by up to 3%. Weighing in at just 87 kg, including oil, the 8HP70 transmission sets a new benchmark in lightweight design. The impressive total spread of 7.0 ensures that your engine operates at its optimal point, providing you with greater acceleration and reduced fuel consumption.

Designed for a Sustainable Future

The 8HP transmission is not only about power and precision; it’s also about responsibility. Designed to meet the most stringent future consumption and CO2 emission standards, the 8HP transmission reduces average fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 3% in upper and middle-class vehicles. Its advanced design is fully compatible with hybrid drives, further enhancing fuel efficiency and supporting environmentally conscious driving.

Cutting-Edge Technology for Superior Performance

The 8HP transmission is packed with technological innovations to minimize power loss and maximize performance. Key features include:

  • Reduced drag torques and engine speed for minimized power loss.
  • Greater transmission spacing and lower system pressures for enhanced efficiency.
  • Multidisk separation of brakes for improved durability and performance.
  • New torsional dampers for superior hydrodynamic power transmission and further engine speed reduction.

Ready for Tomorrow

The 8HP transmission is designed not just for today’s engines but for the powertrains of the future. Whether it's a 3-cylinder engine or an 8-cylinder powerhouse, 8HP is fully equipped to deliver outstanding performance across the board.

Discover the limitless possibilities with the 8HP transmission – where innovation meets performance, and efficiency drives the future.

BMW 8HP Transmission Identification Guide

General Instructions

  1. Location of Identification Number:

    • Look at the left-hand side of the transmission, at the rear bottom (Point A). The last row of numbers indicates the transmission model.
  2. Oil Cooler Port Size:

    • Measure the size of the oil cooler port (Point B) in millimeters.
    • Identify the mounting thread size (either M6 or M8).
  3. Output Flange:

    • Measure the output flange PCD (Pitch Circle Diameter) and insert size.
    • Note that AWD transmissions do not have an output flange measurement applicable.
  4. Transmission Length:

    • Measure the length of the transmission (Point D).
  5. Reference Measurements:

    • For detailed reference measurements, consult the Transmission Technical Information page.
