The 10L80 10-speed automatic transmission was co-developed by General Motors and Ford in response to increasingly strict fuel economy and emissions regulations. While both companies implemented their own calibrations, the 10L80 is GM’s version—engineered to handle the demands of modern high-performance and heavy-duty vehicles while delivering smooth shifting and improved fuel efficiency.

Found in vehicles like the Chevrolet Camaro SS, Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra, and Cadillac CTS-V, the 10L80 was built to balance brute strength with refined drivability. This advanced transmission design allows GM’s performance vehicles to maintain higher horsepower at lower RPMs, while maximizing torque transfer and minimizing lag between shifts.

One of the key benefits of the 10-speed design is its ability to keep the engine operating in the optimal power band with minimal RPM drop between gears—similar to the seamless feel of a CVT but with the durability and responsiveness of a traditional automatic. The tight gear spacing also improves off-the-line performance, mid-range acceleration, and highway fuel economy.

To support this balance of power and efficiency, the 10L80 features a wide 7.39 overall gear ratio spread, including a low first gear for aggressive launches and three overdrive gears for cruising efficiency.
