Description

This ATSG Ford 10R140 TechTran manual provides a step-by-step breakdown of the 10R140 transmission, covering full disassembly, reassembly procedures, and detailed diagnostic information to support accurate service and troubleshooting.

The 10R140 was introduced for the 2020 model year and serves as Ford’s heavy-duty 10-speed automatic transmission for Super Duty applications, ranging from F-250 through F-600 trucks. It is paired with multiple engine platforms, including the 6.2L and 7.3L gasoline engines as well as the 6.7L Power Stroke diesel. The transmission is available in both two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations, with options for slip yoke or fixed flange outputs, and can also be equipped for PTO functionality.

Built as a rear-wheel-drive, step-ratio 10-speed, the 10R140 uses a combination of four planetary gear sets, six friction clutch packs, and a mechanical one-way clutch to deliver ten forward gears and reverse. Depending on the application, control is handled by either the vehicle’s PCM in gas platforms or a dedicated TCM in diesel applications.

Hydraulic and electronic control is managed through a two-piece valve body system consisting of an upper and lower assembly. The transmission uses eight solenoids in total, including six shift solenoids (A through F) and a linear force solenoid responsible for regulating line pressure. The shift solenoids are casting-integrated direct-acting units (CIDAS), meaning they operate mechanically without fluid passing through them. Instead, each solenoid uses an internal pin and armature to directly move a valve within the valve body, controlling clutch apply pressure.

Each clutch circuit is paired with its own corresponding solenoid, allowing for precise and proportional control. As electrical current increases, hydraulic pressure increases accordingly, giving the system fine control over clutch engagement and shift quality. In the event of an electrical failure where solenoid power is lost, all solenoids default to the off position. This prevents clutch application and results in no available fail-safe gear engagement.
