The 10R80 was introduced for the 2017 model year as part of a joint development between Ford and GM, with GM’s counterpart known as the 10L80/90. Designed as a rear-wheel-drive, fully electronic 10-speed automatic transmission, it utilizes four planetary gear sets, a combination of holding and rotating clutch packs, and a one-way clutch to achieve ten forward speeds and reverse.
At the center of its operation is a fully electronic control system, managed by either a Powertrain Control Module (PCM) or a dedicated Transmission Control Module (TCM), depending on the vehicle. These systems monitor inputs from multiple sensors to control shift timing, clutch pressure, and torque converter clutch engagement for smooth and efficient operation.
The transmission architecture includes a main control valve body assembly and a torque converter equipped with an internal lockup clutch. This design allows for efficient power transfer while maintaining drivability across a wide range of operating conditions.
The 10R80 is used across a broad range of Ford vehicles, including applications with 2.7L, 3.0L, 3.5L, and 5.0L engines in both trucks and performance platforms. A related unit, the 10R60, is used in lower torque applications such as vehicles equipped with the 2.3L engine.
While similar in overall design to the heavier-duty 10R140, the 10R80 is built for lighter-duty applications, with differences in size, capacity, and internal components to match its intended use.
